Research interest:
Our group is interested in the signaling mechanisms that control synapse formation and maintenance. We use Drosophila as experimental system because the approach of our research is mainly genetics and molecular biology. Currently, our focus is on a PI3K signaling pathway that includes also several ubiquitin ligases (E3) and transcriptional cofactors. We search for the E3 substrates and the gene targets of the identified transcriptional cofactors. Remarkably, all the elements identified so far in this pathway, appear conserved by sequence in vertebrate genomes. Likewise, the synaptogenic activity of the elements identified in Drosophila seems reproduceable in cultures of rat hippocampal neurons.
