Functional characterization of ubiquitin ligases HERC
Our group has focused on the functional characterisation of HERC family proteins. This family constitutes a subgroup of E3 ubiquitin ligases that has such as differential characteristic two domains: RCC1 (Regulator of Chromosome Condensation-1) and HECT (Homologous to E6AP COOH terminus) in their amino acid sequences. Experimental data suggest that HERC proteins are involved in neuroendocrine processes, sterility, cell proliferation and intracellular transport. To molecular/cellular level, we are characterizing protein/protein interactions looking for putative substrates and we are analyzing different pathways where these proteins can be involved. To in vivo level, we are generating mutant animals to investigate their physiological role.
